Music/Film Merchandise

A number of critical factors are involved in determining the value of any item of memorabilia. These are outlined below.

Age
By definition, older pieces of movie / music memorabilia tend to be more expensive than current merchandise which is generally easier to obtain, even if produced in limited quantities.

Condition
In general, the better the condition of movie / music memorabilia items, the more valuable they become. When you evaluate photos in item listings, look for cleanliness and completeness.

Content
An item such as a handwritten letter or a signed document that provides some level of insight into an item's historical "provenance" can lead to a substantial increase in value.

Rarity
Unique music / movie memorabilia and rare autographs of famous, or indeed, infamous, people tend to be highly prized. A deceased person produces no further autographs, so the value of existing signatures increases markedly. Some collectors focus on purchasing items relating to people they believe to be ready for imminent departure!

Authenticity
Authentication is a structured way of determining whether a given piece is genuine and appropriately described. Trained, experienced experts can often distinguish fakes via seemingly minor details. Proof of authenticity can take many forms. Photos of the person wearing the item or signing it; signed testimonials from people associated with a particular artist or from the studio. Movie memorabilia should be checked for details as to how, when and where the item was obtained. This back story or "provenance" is critical in determining value. Proof of the authenticity of movie memorabilia can take other forms, including the actor or actress' name written on the collar, perhaps a costumer's tag, or indeed studio markings on props. A Certificates of Authenticity from the studio is also of value.
