Promo CDs

Promo CDs are copies of music singles / albums produced for promotional purposes. They are often sent to music radio and television stations, music journalists, reviewers and DJs prior to the official release in order to receive airplay and reviews. Generally promo CDs are marked, "Licensed for promotional use only. Not for resale," or similar. Promo CDs take different forms, with some containing simply the CD in a plastic case with no artwork. Others are complete singles / albums with complete artwork, used for promotional purposes. The value of a promo CD is determined by its type and the featured band / artist(s).

All promotional CDs tend to be rare, but those with complete artwork are the rarest of the lot and likely to attract higher prices than a simple CD and anonymous plastic case. These music collectibles tend to be attractive to collectors of music memorabilia for their rarity value alone, but signed promo CDs are particularly desirable.

Amongst this range of rare collectibles, devotees of music memorabilia will find some eye-catching examples. Iron Maiden's "The Trooper" is a deleted, 2005 issue, UK 5-track CD single including the original version, along with live recordings from 2003 and 2005. Promo CDs for Queen's October 1995 "Heaven for Everyone" which reached no. 2 in the UK chart and their January 1998 "No-One But You", which peaked at no. 13 also seem likely to be popular music collectibles, as both feature the deceased Freddie Mercury.

Less desirable, but nonetheless very collectible, music memorabilia include a promo CD for Unkle's "Reign," used as the soundtrack for "Masterchef." Other offerings are Def Leppard's "Best Of," Fat Boy Slim's "Wonderful Night," Will Smith's "Switch" and Canadian rock band Sum41's "We're All To Blame." Collectors of promotional CDs will also find the competitive pricing of these music collectibles very much to their liking, allowing an impressive assortment to be assembled on a limited budget.
