The area of sports memorabilia is vast, comprising a huge range of sports equipment of different types from a variety of sports.
Perhaps the most popular sports collectibles are signed photographs. As with all autographed items, authenticity is crucial and purchasing from a reputable vendor, who is a member of a recognised body and will provide a Certificate of Authenticity, thus verifying the signature as being genuine, is definitely recommended.
The value of such photographs will be determined by how desirable the signatory may be and the number of such items in circulation. For example, a signed "flyer" featuring former top jockey and now TV presenter, Willie Carson, may attract just a few pounds, whereas a signed photograph of former heavyweight boxing champion Leon Spinks, who beat Muhammad Ali to gain the title in only his 8th fight, will attract significantly more. Classic photos of sporting heroes in action tend to be more valuable. An autographed photo of Michael Owen and David Beckham celebrating an England goal is highly collectible and hence valuable.
However, sporting memorabilia is by no means confined to photographs. Football shirts are popular and form a colourful collection. If a shirt has been worn and / or signed by a famous player, its value is greatly enhanced. Golf fans may be attracted to flags from major tournaments or balls used by famous professional players. Boxing enthusiasts find gloves and other equipment to be particularly attractive sports collectibles. Any item sports memorabilia worn by one of the boxing legends or a modern great attract high prices. Signed gloves can vary in value from tens of pounds to thousands, dependent upon the signatory. Sports collectibles relating to Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano and Sugar Ray Robinson are highly desirable, although Muhammad Ali memorabilia tends to attract the highest prices of all.
