The British Phonographic Industry awards "gold" certification to singles that have sold 60,000+ copies, while the American music certification body, the Recording Industry Association of America requires sales in excess of half a million copies, given the relative sizes of the two countries. The fact that only a select "band" of singles achieve gold status makes them highly collectible and thus sought after by collectors.
A striking CD gold single, accompanied by the original cover, hand-signed by the artist(s), makes an excellent addition to any display of music memorabilia. Better quality discs are electroplated, to avoid cracking or peeling. Signed gold discs or signed gold records should be accompanied by a Certificate Of Authenticity from the retailer, ensuring the authenticity of the signatures.
A wide range of signed discs is available, featuring signed records by bands and artists such as U2, Akon, Richard Ashcroft, Anastacia, Natasha Bedingfield, Busted, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Eric Clapton, Girls Aloud, Meatloaf, Gareth Gates and Robbie Williams to name but some in the collection available. With the majority priced at less than £50, they represent excellent value for money. One exception in the gold discs range is U2's hit, "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight," at £79.99. However, the CD cover features personal, hand-signed autographs from all members of the band.
Mariah Carey's hit "Touch My Body" seems sure to prove popular amongst the signed gold records, the artist having released no less than 23 gold certified singles.
Each of the gold discs is framed in a 12" x 10" gold aluminium frame with mount and covered with plexiglass (which doesn't break, unlike glass).
Although not particularly valuable, ABBA's huge 1977 hit "Dancing Queen" is extremely popular with collectors of gold records. It was the band's only US No.1 and also hit top spot in 13 other countries.
