The English singer and songwriter Rick Astley rose to fame after the release of his 1987 single 'Never Gonna Give You Up.' This single spent five weeks at number 1 in the UK and was also a hit in 15 other countries. He continues to hold the record as the UK's only solo male artist to have had his 8 first singles reach the UK top ten. Globally he has sold an impressive 40 million records. After a 14 year 'retirement' he returned to the music industry, when the video for 'Never Gonna Give You Up' suddenly rose to prominence again in an Internet meme and was voted 'Best Act Ever' at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards.
R.E.M, an American rock group from the state of Georgia, formed in 1980 and consisted of lead singer Michael Stipe and band mates, Mike Mills, Peter Buck and Bill Berry. Their first released single in 1981 was 'Radio Free Europe' by the record label Hib-Tone. After a swing of hits in the rest of the 1980s, they gained substantial commercial success in the early 1990s and their single 'Everybody Hurts' became a major international hit.
They are widely regarded as pioneers of the alternative rock genre and two of their most successful albums include 'Out of Time' (released 1991) and 'Automatic for the People' (released 1992). In 1996, REM made a $80 million deal with Warner Bros - the largest recording contract on record at the time. During the late 1990s and 2000s, R.E.M continued with mixed success and after over 25 years of hits, they were finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
