Of the most prominent bands to emerge form Birmingham, one group took their fame and musical success to astronomical heights throughout the 1980´┐Żs. The band was Duran Duran, and with their cool good looks and pounding, pop trance style of rock music, would go on to release many Gold Records and Platinum Records throughout their years. With total worldwide record sales over 100 million, Duran Duran is among the most popular British bands of all time.
The group began in the late 1970´┐Żs, as John Taylor and Nick Rhodes joined together and began to try and get a band off of the ground. Eventually, Duran Duran was formed with the duo and also included Simon Le Bon, Andy Taylor, and Roger Taylor, though the lineup would often change throughout the band´┐Żs subsequent history.
Eventually signed to EMI, Duran Duran released their debut Gold Record Duran Duran in 1981. The first single released was ´┐ŻPlanet Earth´┐Ż, a song that captured new Romantic style with an 80´┐Żs pop essence, and a sound that Duran Duran helped to form. Although successful, the most popular song on the album was ´┐ŻGirls on Film´┐Ż, which was a top 5 hit in the UK. ´┐ŻGirls on Film´┐Ż held a resounding chorus with a fun disco/pop style that still carried a needed essence of power rock. Duran Duran would eventually become a Platinum Record in 1985 after the band grew to new successes.
In 1982, Duran Duran reached mega heights with their second album, Platinum Record Rio. This brought the band serious attention in the USA where they were marketed as a dance band. Although the album had a handful of hit songs, my favorite track from Rio was ´┐ŻHungry Like the Wolf´┐Ż. Carrying on the elements of pop rock and synthesized 80´┐Żs melodies, the song was both catchy and fun, becoming a massive blast at dance clubs worldwide.
Under immense pressure to put out more hits, Duran Duran put out their third album, Platinum Record Seven and the Ragged Tiger. As one of the bands that pioneered the music video world with MTV hits, Duran Duran made a popular video of the song, ´┐ŻUnion of the Snake´┐Ż. Another single, ´┐ŻThe Reflex´┐Ż would be Duran Duran´┐Żs first number 1 hit in the USA. With high energy and soul, ´┐ŻThe Reflex´┐Ż was well designed for dance music fans. With a vibrant chorus and strange singing, the song put the band to legendary status.
At this point, however, several members wanted to pursue other musical projects and Duran Duran would never be the same again. Although the group collaborated on the awesome 1985 James Bond song, ´┐ŻA View to a Kill´┐Ż, they soon lost members Andy Taylor and Roger Taylor, who were clearly eyeing a change in their lives.
In 1986, Duran Duran released the Gold Record album Notorious with several new members. With the hit song ´┐ŻNotorious´┐Ż, it was clear that the band would continue on well. ´┐ŻNotorious´┐Ż was a great dancing song with a tight drum and bass duo. The band would continue to play until the present time and released several other Gold Records like Big Thing, Duran Duran (The Wedding Album), Thank You, and Astronaut.
