Akon Platinum Record Display Completes any Living Room

The son of noted jazz percussionist Mor Thiam, Senegalese-American singer-songwriter and producer Akon has released three albums to date, all of which have been certified as Platinum Records. Raised in Senegal until the age of seven, Akon honed high skills as a songwriter and performer of mainstream hip hop after moving with his family to the United States. Providing backing vocals on recordings for numerous established hip hop and R&B artists, he finally achieved success as a solo recording artist with his Platinum Record debut album, entitled Trouble.

Trouble's most successful track was the autobiographical "Locked Up", which recounts Akon's time spent in prison in New Jersey. Gritty and emotional, and eliciting a powerful sense of loneliness and dread, the single proved resonant with audiences and achieved double-platinum status in the US. The rest of the tracks on Trouble, while solid and stand-alone, feature themes familiar to hip hop listeners with titles like "Ghetto","Gangsta" and "Easy Road", and it is clear that "Lonely" is the star track of the album.

Akon's next studio effort, Konvicted, again deals with autobiographical themes, but this time they concern his sudden rise to fame after years of backing other artists. An unusual highlight of these themes is the track "The Rain", which expresses the sadness and presumable alienation he felt after becoming famous. Additionally, this album features guest-spots from other artists such as Snoop Dogg and Eminem.

In the time between Konvicted's release in 2006 and his next album, Akon entered the business world with such ventures as his fashion labels Konvict Clothing and Aliaune, and reality television projects.

His 2008 release, Freedom, marked a change in artistic direction for Akon. In contrast to the previous two releases, Freedom employs less of the hallmarks of his introspective prison scenery and R&B club jams, and instead uses synthesizers and shimmery vocals to create an album that is much more dance-focused and much less hip hop. Lyrically, Freedom's content is lighter, and seems to express the positive aspects of life as a Platinum Record-selling artist. The album also features several appearances from well-known hip hop and R&B artists such as Lil Wayne on "I'm So Paid", T-Pain (who also has a production credit) on "Holla Holla", and most notably former Fugees member Wyclef Jean, who sings on "Sunny Day".

Near the release of Freedom, Akon had been working closely with pop legend and multi-Gold Record and Platinum Record selling artist Michael Jackson on several different efforts. Jackson, however, tragically passed away in 2009 before their projects were completed, though a single, "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 2008" was released to Gold Record certification. After Jackson's passing, Akon publicly expressed his sadness and gratitude at the opportunity to have worked with Jackson: "Mike is the King of Pop, and I think that it's a dream come true for any major artist/songwriter/producer to be able to work with the best in the business..." Akon's next album, to be titled Stadium, is expected to be released sometime in 2013. Everything Collectible has a great supply of Gold Record and Platinum Record displays of this impressive hip hop artist with a sweet voice!
